Alejandra Cardona-Mayorga graduated in Graphic Design from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 2012. For eight years she has deepened her work in the study of photography, visual communication, and moving images in different fields.
In 2013 she did a postgraduate degree in photography where she developed her interest in the non-binary image of the body by making portraits of lesbian women in Bogotá, this project allowed her to deepen the language of photographic creation. In 2010, she won first place in the Colombian Cancer Institute photography contest with her project No Fumar es la Actitud, her photographs were used in a social awareness campaign in public spaces in Bogotá.
Her interest in social work with communities and minorities has led her to get involved and worked together with different non-profit organizations. Her main lines of work have been film studies, gender, education, and science. This allowed her to work with the Women's Agency, an administrative entity of the city of Bogotá, being the leader of the communication team from 2013 to 2016, where she developed audiovisual projects on what it means to be a diverse woman in her city that has social problems such as high levels of domestic violence, feminicide, and sexism. In 2015, she was one of those selected among 1500 proposals to design the image of the Ibero-American Theater Festival of Bogotá-FITBO XV. In 2016 she received a scholarship to complete a photography diploma from the Pedro Meyer Foundation in Mexico with her multimedia project Herbocetario which deals with the different uses of ancestral plants. That same year she led the communication agency of the National University of Colombia, Unimedios, until 2018 where her work was mainly focused on the renewal of the brand commitment from promotional photography and graphic design. Her ability to tell her stories and her sensitivity to the moving image improved the feeling of belonging in the university community and led her to open new digital communication channels such as social networks and other platforms.
From 2017 to 2020, she was in charge of all filming and photography development in The Geology of Colombia project at the Servicio Geológico Colombiano. She directed all the audiovisual production of the dissemination strategy for the dissemination of geoscientific knowledge. In 2018 she was selected in the open call for the photographic book Ser Mujer en Latinoamérica published by the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana de México. In 2020 she was chosen for the Coronalibro collective project, and the multimedia exhibition COVID-A, sponsored by the Research in Humanities and Arts Center (HARI) and the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures of Royal Holloway, in association with the University of London, Cuajimalpa Unit of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana and the General Dissemination Coordination of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. Since 2020 she has been a volunteer in the international organization Chicas Poderosas, which encourages the participation of women in the media.
She currently works at the film production company Orión Films as an impact producer of their productions, she is currently developing the campaign for the documentary Champeta en Mano, a project that won the award for the best project in Filma Afro 2019, the Ibermedia Laboratory for the Development of Documentary Projects. The project was selected at the XV Lau Haizetara Documentary Co-Production Forum of the San Sebastián Film Festival. This project was also part of the MiradasDoc 2020 film meeting in Tenerife. In 2021, she worked as the third assistant director in the Entrevista Laboral film directed by Colombian director Carlos Osuna. 2022 She did a master’s degree in Film at Liverpool John Moores University in addition, she participated as a programmer for the LJMU MA Short Film Festival in the second edition, and she was part of the ITV30 placement program of the Liverpool Screen School at LJMU.
